Shop MotorsLocate the data nameplate on your HVAC unit. It is typically on the side, back, or inside panel.
Choose the manufacturer from the dropdown. This determines the serial number decoding pattern.
Type in the full serial number exactly as shown on the nameplate. Include all letters and numbers.

Understanding your HVAC system's age is critical for maintenance planning, budgeting for replacement, and making smart repair decisions. A system approaching the end of its expected lifespan may not be worth a major repair, while a relatively new system almost certainly is. Age also determines whether your equipment uses phased-out R-22 refrigerant (pre-2010 units), which makes repairs significantly more expensive.
Your system's manufacture date, combined with its SEER or AFUE efficiency rating, tells you how much energy it wastes compared to modern equipment. A 2008-era 10 SEER air conditioner uses nearly twice the electricity of a 2026 model rated at SEER2 16+. Over a cooling season, that translates to $400–$800 in extra energy costs annually.
Every HVAC manufacturer embeds the date of manufacture somewhere in the serial number, but each brand uses a different encoding scheme. Carrier uses a week-and-year format in the first four digits. Goodman and Amana put the 2-digit year first. Trane uses letter codes or numeric year indicators. York historically used alphabetic codes for the year. This calculator implements the most common patterns for each brand to give you an accurate age estimate.

Format: WWYY_______ — First 2 digits = week (01–52), next 2 digits = year. Example: 2516A12345 = Week 25, 2016. Older units (pre-2000) may use a letter code for the year.
Multiple formats exist. Common: year embedded in first few characters. Look for a recognizable 2-digit or 4-digit year. Example: 21523XXXXX could indicate 2015 (digits 2–3). Some use letter-year codes where a character maps to a specific year.
Format: letters followed by YY. The first 2 numeric digits represent the year. Example: 5816E12345 = 2016 (first two digits after any alpha prefix, or the digits 58 meaning week 58... more commonly the first pure 2-digit group). Best practice: look for YY in first 4 characters.
Format: YY________ — First 2 digits = year of manufacture. Example: 1604123456 = 2016. Very straightforward decoding.
Format: MMYY_______ or WWYY_______ — First 2 digits = month or week, next 2 digits = year. Example: 0316X12345 = March 2016. Some models use week numbering instead of month.
Older York units use letter codes for year (e.g., specific letters in the serial map to years). Newer units (2004+) often embed a 4-digit year or 2-digit year in positions 3–4 of the serial. Example: W1E1234567 — check positions for year encoding. The letter-code chart is available on York's website.
