What this cross-reference actually does

A Genteq ECM blower motor carries two identities: the Genteq part number stamped on the motor itself (the 5SME39 or 5SME44 series number), and the OEM number the equipment manufacturer assigned it (Carrier HD46AR242, Trane MOT13906, Goodman 0131M00024, and so on). A tech in an attic usually has one of the two, rarely both. This tool accepts either. Our catalog carries the Genteq number in the product title and the OEM cross-reference numbers as searchable attributes, so both paths land on the same remanufactured motor.

What you get back is not a "suggested universal replacement". It is an OEM-spec remanufactured Genteq motor, built from genuine Genteq cores, programmed to the original parameters, with a two-year warranty against the one-year industry standard.

One scope note, so nobody wastes a search: we remanufacture indoor blower motors. Condenser fan motors and PSC motors are not part of the catalog, so a condenser fan cross reference is not something this page can answer.

Cross-reference by ECM generation: X13, 2.3, 2.5, 3.0 and EON

Generation is the first filter, before horsepower and before the frame. An ECM 2.3 does not drop into an ECM 3.0 application just because the shaft matches, and an X13 does not replace a variable-speed motor at all. Identify the generation on the label, then cross-reference inside it.

Constant torque against constant airflow

The two behave differently, and this is where most bad cross-references happen. A constant torque motor (X13) holds torque at the tap you select and lets airflow fall as static rises. A constant airflow motor (ECM 2.3, 2.5, 3.0, sold as variable speed) holds a CFM target and raises torque to defend it. Same physical frame in many cases, completely different behavior in the duct.

Consequences when you replace one with the other: an X13 in a variable-speed application loses the airflow target the board expects, so a dirty filter becomes a comfort complaint instead of a compensated condition. A variable-speed motor in an X13 application needs control signals the board does not send. Cross-reference inside the generation, or send the nameplate to technical support and we will tell you whether a bridge exists.

Air handler, furnace and package unit motors

The same Genteq number can appear in three very different cabinets, and what changes is rarely the electronics.

  • Air handler. Usually the X13 family, often supplied with the blower arms. Shaft length and mount ring matter as much as the part number.
  • Furnace. Both families appear here. Mid-efficiency runs X13, modulating and communicating runs variable speed.
  • Package unit. Same motors, tighter cabinet. Confirm the shaft length and the clearance before ordering, since a correct part number that does not physically fit still means a second trip.

Rotation does not collapse. Motors that share a base can differ in rotation, CW against CCW viewed from the shaft end. That is one of the few attributes no cross-reference chart can infer for you: read it off the label or the old motor.

Cross-reference by equipment brand

If you have the furnace or air handler model rather than the motor, the brand pages list the motors that fit each line: Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Lennox, Rheem, York, American Standard, Bryant, Amana, Nordyne, Heil, Tempstar, Ruud, Payne, Coleman, Comfortmaker, Westinghouse, Bard, Daikin, ICP. Reading a Genteq ECM part number

Almost every number in the family follows the same pattern. Decoding it tells you which motor generation and horsepower you are holding before you even search.

The trailing digits matter. Two motors that look identical and share the frame and horsepower can be listed against completely different equipment, so cross-reference on the full number whenever you have it.

Before you order

Confirm the motor actually failed before you cross-reference it. A large share of "dead ECM" calls are a failed control board, a low-voltage fault or a seized wheel, and a new motor fixes none of those. Work the sequence in How to test an ECM blower motor first, then come back with a verdict.

Questions techs ask

Do you need the OEM number or the Genteq number?

Either one. If both are legible, use the Genteq number, since it identifies the motor unambiguously and the OEM number sometimes maps to more than one revision.

What is the difference between a constant torque and a constant airflow ECM?

Constant torque (X13) holds the torque you select on a tap and lets airflow drop as static rises. Constant airflow (ECM 2.3, 2.5 and 3.0, marketed as variable speed) holds a CFM target and raises torque to hold it. They are not interchangeable even when the frame is.

Does the same motor fit an air handler and a furnace?

Often the electronics are the same and the installation is not. Shaft length, mount ring, arms and rotation change by cabinet, so verify those four against the old motor even when the part number matches.

What if the nameplate is burnt off?

Identify the equipment model and serial instead, then use the HVAC serial number lookup or send the photos to technical support.

Do the motors arrive programmed?

Yes. Motors ship programmed to the original application parameters, so the replacement is plug and play in the great majority of installs. Speed tap changes are covered in how to fix the motor speed.

Is a remanufactured motor the same as used?

No. Cores are stripped, rebuilt with new bearings and electronics as required, reprogrammed and tested. Details on the quality control page and in are your products remanufactured.
