Genteq Endbell Identification Guide: Tell 2.3, 2.5, 3.0, EON and X13 Apart

Genteq ECM families are told apart by the endbell (control module) and its connectors: the 2.3 and 2.5 have a painted steel control with a 16-pin connector, the 3.0 uses a 4-pin connector, the EON uses a 16-pin connector, and the X13 shows numbered speed taps with line voltage on L, G and N terminals. Confirm with the label and your OEM part number before ordering.

Key Takeaways

  • The 2.3 and 2.5 are separated by wire count in the 16-pin connector: 6 or more wires is a 2.3, 5 or fewer is a 2.5.
  • The 3.0 uses a 4-pin communication connector; the EON uses a 16-pin connector.
  • Every variable-speed family (2.0, 2.3, 2.5, EON, 3.0) uses a 5-pin AC power connector.
  • Early models may have no identification sticker, so use the connector and control shape.
  • Order by OEM part number, not by family alone.

Identification by Family

These identifications follow Genteq's own ECM Service Guide motor ID chart. Cut power and wait 5 minutes before handling any plug.

ECM 2.3. Painted, steel motor control. The 16-pin connector carries 6 or more wires. Older 2.0 controls are unpainted cast aluminum and square-shaped controls are the 1.0.

ECM 2.5. Painted, steel motor control like the 2.3, with 5 or fewer wires in the 16-pin connector. Genteq's 2014 guide lists the 2.5 as no longer in production, which is why remanufactured stock matters.

ECM 3.0. Heat sink and an identification sticker on the control, with a 4-pin communication connector.

ECM EON. The same general control appearance as the 3.0, with a 16-pin communication connector.

X13. A constant-torque motor with an identification sticker, a heat sink, speed taps numbered 1 to 5, and line voltage connections marked L, G and N. It is a voltage-specific motor.

Connector Layouts

Family Type Communication / control side Power side Quick tell
ECM 2.3 Variable speed 16-pin, 6 or more wires 5-pin AC power Painted steel control
ECM 2.5 Variable speed 16-pin, 5 or fewer wires 5-pin AC power Painted steel control
ECM 3.0 Variable speed 4-pin 5-pin AC power Heat sink and ID sticker
ECM EON Variable speed 16-pin 5-pin AC power Heat sink and ID sticker
X13 Constant torque Speed taps 1 to 5 (24 VAC or 9 to 23 VDC command) L, G, N line voltage Numbered tap terminals

A 16-4 pin adapter (Genteq 5K015) exists to connect a 2.5 harness to a 3.0, which confirms the connector difference between the two.

Reading the Label

Genteq places an identification sticker on the variable-speed controls and the X13, next to the heat sink, though early models do not have one. The label together with the equipment's own nameplate gives the model number, voltage and horsepower. Variable-speed models are dual voltage, 120 or 240 VAC, while the X13 is built for a single voltage (115, 230, 277 or 460 VAC).

If the label is missing or unreadable, use the connector pattern in the table and the furnace or air handler's own model number. How to find your model number walks through the nameplate on both the motor and the equipment.

Before pulling a plug, photograph the endbell, both connectors and the label. A photo of the connector faces settles most identification questions, and it also records how the harness was routed for reassembly. Genteq's guide adds a handling rule worth following: pull on the connector body, never the wires, because most connectors are keyed and forcing one the wrong way can damage the motor.

What to Order

Match the OEM part number printed on the original motor, not only the family. The same family covers many horsepower, rotation and mounting variants, and the module is programmed to the part number. United HVAC Motors programs each motor to your OEM part number, ships orders placed before 3 pm ET the same day (Same Day Processing), includes Free 1-2 day shipping from Tampa, Florida, and backs every motor with a 2-Year Replacement Warranty. More than 30,000 motors are in stock.

Use the ECM motor cross reference to convert an OEM number, then go to the family: ECM 2.3, ECM 2.5, ECM 3.0, ECM EON or X13. Remanufactured motors on the site cost $329.99 to $1,249.99 depending on horsepower and family.

FAQs

How do I tell a Genteq ECM 2.3 from a 2.5?

Both have a painted steel motor control and a 16-pin connector. A 2.3 has 6 or more wires in the connector; a 2.5 has 5 or fewer.

Which Genteq ECM uses a 4-pin connector?

The ECM 3.0 uses a 4-pin communication connector. The EON uses a 16-pin connector, according to Genteq's ECM Service Guide.

What does the 5-pin connector do?

It is the AC power connector on the 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, EON and 3.0. Line voltage and ground are checked there when a motor does not run.

How is the X13 different from the other ECM families?

The X13 is a constant-torque motor with numbered speed taps and L, G, N line voltage connections, while the others are variable-speed motors with communication connectors.

Can I order by family name alone?

No. Order by the OEM part number from the motor or equipment label, because horsepower, rotation, mounting and programming vary within each family.

Replacing one motor? Match your OEM part number in the family above; it ships from Tampa, Florida. Contractor? The contractor program covers volume orders.
