Rheem and Ruud Furnace Error Codes Explained

Updated
Read time
5 min

Rheem and Ruud furnaces report faults on a seven-segment display (single-stage 801T and two-stage R96V families), where the blower codes are 61 (blower fault, motor cannot run) and, on the R96V, the horsepower conflict code d6. A blower fault is often a restriction, a thermal trip or a memory card problem, so work through airflow and wiring before ordering a motor. Ruud is a Rheem brand, but confirm the table in the manual for your exact Ruud model.

Key Takeaways

  • Code 61 means the control declared the blower unable to run. It can follow a limit that stayed open more than 150 seconds.
  • On the R96V, d6 means the motor horsepower does not match the memory card data, and d1 means model data is missing entirely.
  • Code 10 is a one-hour soft lockout, shown alternating with the fault that caused it.
  • Never use a memory card from another furnace. Rheem warns it can cause improper blower operation and heat exchanger damage.
  • Code sets vary by model, so check the table in your own installation manual.

How Rheem and Ruud Furnaces Show Codes

The 801T single-stage manual describes a seven-segment display that shows 0 in standby, H for gas heat, F for continuous fan and C for cooling. Two-digit codes flash the first digit, then the second, then pause, and repeat. Two active faults alternate on the display. The R96V two-stage manual adds lowercase and uppercase letters for low and high stage, plus d-codes for model data. The R802V and R97V sheets also list a PlusOne seven-segment display, but their code tables were not available to us, so confirm those against your manual. If a display looks wrong, check whether it is upside-down.

Blower Codes First

Code 61: Blower Fault, Motor Cannot Run

The 801T manual lists 61 as blower unable to run. The R96V manual calls it a critical fault in which the furnace will not operate in any mode. Rheem lists a motor thermal trip from a restriction or bearing failure, a faulty PFC choke, corrupted model data, compromised motor or PFC wiring, a damaged or loose blower wheel, or catastrophic motor failure. Five-minute check: filter and wheel, then the motor harness, then the memory card. Yes, the motor is a possible cause, but it is one of six. The ordered test sequence is in how to test an ECM blower motor.

Code 61 With 10 or 22: Dead Blower Lockout

If the main limit stays open longer than 150 seconds, the display alternates 61 with 22, then 61 with 10 for a one-hour lockout. A fourth dead-blower declaration in one heat call causes a hard lockout. The usual cause is a motor or wheel that stopped moving air, so inspect both.

d6: Horsepower Conflict on Memory Card

The motor horsepower does not match the card's model data. Causes are a wrong-horsepower motor, or a wrong card or control. The furnace still operates and the code shows in standby. After any motor replacement, match the OEM part number and horsepower.

d1 and d4: Model Data Missing

d1 means no model data, and the furnace will not run in any mode. It usually means the memory card is missing or was not moved to a replacement control. d4 means the card is blank or corrupted while valid data remains in the control, and the furnace operates normally. Reinstall the original card and cycle power. The motor is not the cause.

Blower Fault, Blower Can Still Run

The R96V manual also lists a non-critical blower fault where the motor hits a speed, torque or temperature limit because of high static pressure. Thermostat calls continue. Remove duct restrictions and replace the filter. This is an airflow problem, not a failed motor.

Ignition, Pressure Switch and Limit Codes

Code Meaning (Rheem) Blower Motor the Cause?
10 One-hour soft lockout, alternates with the cause Only with 61
11 Failed ignition No
12 Low flame sense No
13 Flame lost after established No
14 Flame present with gas valve off No
22 Main limit open (801T) Yes, via airflow or a failed motor
26 Line and neutral reversed (801T) No
30 Open fuse, low-voltage short (R96V) No
33 Rollout switch open Rarely
55 / 57 Pressure switch stuck closed / stuck open (801T); high pressure switch closed / open (R96V) No
93 Internal control fault No

Code 22: Main Limit Open

The 801T manual lists code 22 as main limit open. Check the filter, registers and blower speed. If it persists past 150 seconds, expect 61 to appear.

How to Reset a Rheem or Ruud Furnace

Rheem requires that the original fault is cleared and power is cycled off and on. Soft lockouts also clear if a heat call is cycled off for more than 2 and less than 20 seconds, or on their own after one hour (five minutes for the low-pressure switch start lockout). Code 93 cannot be reset by cycling the heat call. If the cause is still there, the lockout returns.

Which Motor Your Rheem or Ruud Furnace Uses

Match the OEM part number on the motor, not the furnace model. Browse the Rheem replacement blower motors page or the Ruud page. A wrong horsepower produces d6 on the R96V, so verify the nameplate before ordering.

When to Call a Pro

Call a licensed technician for 14, 26, 93, gas valve work, repeat lockouts and any rollout trip. The HVAC fault code lookup covers other brands, and Goodman owners can use the Goodman and Amana error codes guide.

FAQs

What does code 61 mean on a Rheem furnace?

The control declared the blower unable to run. Check for a thermal trip, wheel damage, wiring, the PFC choke and the memory card before replacing the motor.

What does d6 mean?

The motor horsepower does not match the model data on the memory card. It follows a wrong-horsepower motor or a wrong card.

How do I reset a Rheem furnace lockout?

Fix the cause, then cycle power off and on. Soft lockouts also clear after one hour or when the heat call is cycled off for 2 to 20 seconds.

Are Ruud and Rheem codes the same?

Ruud is a Rheem brand and many models are closely related, but code tables are model specific. Confirm against the manual for your Ruud model.

Can I use a memory card from another furnace?

No. Rheem warns that a card from another unit can cause improper blower operation and heat exchanger damage.
