How to Read an HVAC Blower Motor Nameplate
The nameplate is the whole job. Get it read right and the replacement bolts in, plugs in and runs. Get one field wrong and you are back in the attic on a Saturday with a motor that fits the mount but fights the system.
Here is what every field on a blower motor plate means, and which ones actually decide whether a part number will work.
What is on the plate
Layout changes by manufacturer, but the same information shows up on nearly every ECM and PSC blower motor built in the last twenty years.

Part number or OEM number, and why you want both
An ECM blower carries two identities. The manufacturer number identifies the motor itself. The OEM number identifies the application the equipment maker built it into. A tech standing in a crawl space usually has one of the two, almost never both.
Use the manufacturer number when you can read it. It points at one motor. The OEM number sometimes maps to more than one revision, because equipment makers supersede parts without changing the number on the furnace label.
Either one goes into the ECM motor cross reference and comes back with the remanufactured equivalent, with stock and price on screen.
Horsepower tells you less than the frame does
Two motors can both say 1/2 HP and still not interchange. Horsepower is an output rating. Fitment is a physical question: frame diameter, mounting ring, shaft diameter, shaft length and how the blower wheel sits on it.
On the Genteq family the letters in the part number carry the horsepower class. DXL is the 1/3 HP class, HL is 1/2 HP, NXL is 3/4 HP and SXL is 1 HP. The trailing digits are what tie the motor to a specific application, so cross-reference on the full number whenever the plate still has it.
Volts, amps and the number people misread
A plate that reads 115, 208-230VAC is telling you the motor accepts either supply. That is normal on an ECM and it is not a range you get to choose from at install time; it is the electronics doing the work.
Amps are worth writing down before you pull the old motor. Full load amps on the plate against what your clamp meter reads on a running system is one of the fastest ways to tell a tired motor from a healthy one fighting bad ductwork. The full sequence is in how to test an ECM blower motor.
Rotation is the field you cannot infer
Rotation is stamped CW or CCW and it is read looking at the shaft end of the motor, not the wiring end. Get this backwards and the blower moves air the wrong way through the wheel.
This is the field that catches people cross-referencing from a chart. In our own catalog, 38 base motors are built in both rotations. Same base motor, same horsepower, same frame, two different part numbers because the shaft turns the other way. No cross-reference table can tell you which one you need. Only the plate or the old motor can.
When the plate is burned off or painted over
It happens on almost every unit over fifteen years old. Three ways out, in order:
- Pull the model and serial off the equipment instead and run them through the HVAC serial number lookup.
- Check the wiring diagram glued inside the blower door. It frequently lists the factory motor part number.
- Photograph the motor, the connector and the equipment label and send it to technical support. We cross-reference by hand, usually the same business day.
Before you order
Confirm the motor is actually the failure. A large share of dead blower calls turn out to be a control board, a low voltage fault or a seized wheel, and a new motor fixes none of those. Work the diagnosis first, then read the plate, then cross-reference.

Questions techs ask
Which number should I search first?
The manufacturer number on the motor. It identifies one motor. If it is gone, use the OEM number from the equipment.
Do I have to match RPM exactly?
On an ECM, no. The plate RPM is a maximum, and the programming decides how the motor behaves in the system. On a PSC motor, speed taps matter and the rating is closer to literal.
What if my replacement lists a different amp draw?
Small differences are normal between a new motor and a fifteen-year-old plate. A large difference usually means you are looking at a different horsepower class or a different voltage configuration.
Can I ignore rotation if the wheel is reversible?
No. The wheel is not the only thing involved. Order the rotation on the plate, or the rotation of the motor you pulled.
