Genteq nameplate above a GE ECM Motors by Regal-Beloit module label on the same ECM 2.3 motor

GE ECM Motor vs Genteq: Same Motor, Different Name?

Updated

A motor labeled GE ECM and a motor labeled Genteq are the same product line. General Electric introduced the ECM blower motor, Regal Beloit bought the business and later replaced the GE name with Genteq, and the engineering, the families and the model numbers carried straight through. What decides whether a replacement fits is not the brand on the label but the model number printed under it and the OEM number the equipment maker assigned to that motor.

Key Takeaways

  • GE ECM and Genteq are the same motor business under two names: GE introduced ECM technology to residential HVAC in 1987, Regal Beloit acquired the business in 2004, and the Genteq name replaced the GE ECM name in 2009.
  • Genteq's own documents describe the 2.3 as a product that "bore a different brand" for part of its life, so an older GE-labeled 2.3 and a Genteq-labeled 2.3 are one motor family.
  • Every ECM blower motor carries two identities: the Genteq model number on the motor (the 5SME39 series is the most common) and the OEM number from the Carrier, Trane, Lennox or other equipment maker.
  • One Genteq base number sits under many OEM numbers, so the base number alone does not guarantee the right program. Match the OEM number, or the full Genteq number when it is legible.
  • Evergreen is a different product: a universal aftermarket motor, not a GE or Genteq original.

How GE ECM Became Genteq

The ownership history is short and documented in Genteq's own service guide and in the trade press of the time.

Year Event What it means on the label
1987 General Electric introduces ECM technology to residential HVAC. Early motors carry GE branding.
2004 Regal Beloit acquires GE's commercial and HVACR motors and capacitors businesses, with the right to use the GE brand through 2009. Documents from this period say "GE ECM by Regal-Beloit."
2009 Regal Beloit rebrands the GE-branded businesses as Genteq. The Genteq logo replaces the GE ECM logo, with phase-in scheduled to finish by December 31, 2009. Motors built after the phase-in carry Genteq; older installed motors still show GE.
2021 Regal Beloit completes its merger with Rexnord's Process and Motion Control segment, creating Regal Rexnord on October 4, 2021. Current Genteq literature carries the Regal Rexnord name; the Genteq product brand continues.

The product lines ran straight through the rebrand. Genteq's 2019 variable-speed brochure dates the 2.3 motor from 1998 and footnotes that the period "includes time during which this product bore a different brand." Its 2022 replacement guide lists "GE model 2.0, Genteq models 2.3" together as one group of constant-airflow motors. The nameplate changed; the motor did not.

Reading an Older GE Nameplate Against a Genteq Part Number

Two numbers matter, and a technician in an attic usually has only one of them.

  1. The model number on the motor decal. Genteq's replacement guide points to the decal on the motor for the ECM model number. On indoor blower motors it is typically a 5SME39 or 5SME44 series number, for example 5SME39HL0252. In United's catalog, EON motors are listed under 5SBA39 numbers.
  2. The OEM number. This is the number the equipment maker assigned, such as a Carrier HD46AR242, a Trane MOT13906 or a Goodman 0131M00024. It appears on the furnace or air handler as well as on the motor.

If the decal is unreadable, work from the OEM number on the equipment, which is the more reliable identity. Older motors add one more wrinkle: Genteq's service guide notes that early 2.3 and 2.5 motors have no identification sticker. The 16-pin connector tells them apart, since a 2.3 has six or more wires in it and a 2.5 has five or fewer. The generation matters because the diagnostic path differs; the 2.5 is checked through the equipment manufacturer's procedures rather than Genteq's TECInspect tool.

Generation identification by endbell, connector and pin count is covered in the Genteq endbell identification guide, and general label reading in how to read an HVAC blower motor nameplate. This page stays on the naming question.

Which Part Numbers Are the Same Motor

You are holding Same motor? What to do
A GE-labeled motor and a Genteq-labeled motor with the same model number Yes. The brand on the label changed in 2009; the product line did not. Match every digit of the model number.
A Genteq model number and an OEM number for the same unit Yes, two identities for one motor. The Genteq number names the motor; the OEM number names the application it was built for. Look up either one. United's cross reference accepts both.
Two OEM numbers that share one Genteq base number Same base motor, not necessarily the same program. Base 5SME39HXL015A, for example, matches 5,499 product listings across 30 brands. Match the OEM number, not the base number alone.
Same horsepower and shaft, different generation (X13, 2.3, 3.0) No. An X13 is constant torque; the 2.3 and 3.0 are constant airflow. A variable-speed application needs control signals an X13 does not use. Cross-reference inside the generation.

The reason the OEM number matters beyond the base number is how these motors are tuned. Genteq's technical literature states that airflow is programmed by the OEM and is "specific and unique to the motor and air mover combination," and its service guide requires a replacement that is a direct replacement for the failed motor, warning that the wrong motor voids warranties and "may produce unexpected results."

Evergreen and Century: Not the Same Thing

Evergreen is Genteq's own aftermarket line of universal motors, numbered in a 6000 series such as 6103E and painted green, and it is not a GE or Genteq original for a specific furnace; Century is another Regal Rexnord motor brand with its own model numbers, not a relabeled Genteq ECM. Neither tells you the OEM program a given system expects. The comparison, including how to trace an Evergreen label back to the original, is on the Evergreen cross reference.

Buying a Match for a GE-Labeled Motor

Start with the full number from the decal, then confirm it against the OEM number on the equipment. Enter either in the ECM motor cross reference; partial numbers work, so 5SME39NXL returns the whole family and the full number returns the exact match. A GE-labeled motor does not need a GE-labeled replacement, because the matching is done on the number, not the logo.

United HVAC Motors remanufactures indoor blower motors to the original manufacturer's specifications, programmed to your OEM part number, and covers them with a 2-Year Replacement Warranty. The GE Genteq blower motor collection lists them from $329.99. United does not sell condenser fan motors or loose control modules, so the lookup is for complete indoor blower motors only.

FAQs

Is a GE ECM motor the same as a Genteq motor?

Yes, in lineage. Regal Beloit acquired GE's ECM business in 2004 and rebranded it as Genteq in 2009. The model families, including the 2.3, carried across the change, so a GE-labeled and a Genteq-labeled motor with the same model number are the same product.

When did GE ECM become Genteq?

Regal Beloit announced the rebrand in 2009, after acquiring GE's commercial and HVACR motors business in 2004 with a license to use the GE brand through 2009. The Genteq logo replaced the GE ECM logo, with the phase-in scheduled to finish by December 31, 2009.

Does a GE-labeled motor need a GE-labeled replacement?

No. Match the model number on the decal and the OEM number from the equipment. The brand printed on the label does not change which motor fits.

Who owns Genteq now?

Regal Rexnord. Regal Beloit completed its merger with Rexnord's Process and Motion Control segment on October 4, 2021, and Genteq literature now carries the Regal Rexnord name.

Is Evergreen the same as Genteq?

No. Evergreen is Genteq's universal aftermarket line, not an original motor for a specific furnace. It uses its own numbers, such as 6103E, and approximates the original airflow profile rather than matching the OEM program.
